A new adventure

A few weeks ago, I mentioned I was going on an overseas trip (you can read the post here). The prospect is very exciting and incredibly daunting, especially as I am just 3 weeks away from departure!

This blog is going to take a slight detour as I prepare to leave Australia and travel the world. For the next few months I hope you’ll follow along with me on my adventures!

As I mentioned though, I’m feeling pretty nervous.

Where does this fear come from?

For me, travelling’s been limited while I’ve been raising a family and, of course, compounded by two years of lockdowns and anxiety about what the world has become.

When I was planning this trip, I was so excited to explore the world again and fulfill a long-held dream to live in Granada for an extended period of time. In recent years I’ve also decided to spend time volunteering overseas. It’s all very exciting except…

As the weeks seep into days before departure, doubts and fears have grown.

I think the biggest reason I’m feeling so nervous about travelling again is that this will be my first solo adventure in over thirty years! And, I’m taking myself completely out of my comfort zone.

In 3 weeks time, I’m going to a remote part of Costa Rica to volunteer with a sea turtle organisation. The only way to get to the scientist’s residence is by bus and boat. There are no paved roads into the village.

The jungle is full of caiman, howler monkeys, sloths, birds galore, deadly snakes and poisonous dart frogs!

On the beach we’ll not only track nesting endangered green turtles, but the jaguars who predate on them.

In our downtime we may walk to an active volcano.

For three weeks I will be out of range of any comforts, familiar people or routines, even easy contact with the people I love and miss the most.

No wonder I feel nervous.

The definition of ‘adventure’ is ‘an unusual, exciting or daring experience’ and I’d be naive to think I wouldn’t have some fears about it.

But I want to do this. I want to push myself. I want to explore this beautiful country and its bounteous wildlife. I want time to think and to write and to do some volunteering. I want an adventure.

I hope you enjoy these posts. Let me know in the comments below.

Until next time,

Jacqui

  1. I would be a bit nervous traveling in a remote place through a jungle, so many unknowns and if transportation breaks down — then what, still we have to experience life. Have fun, be safe. Bring your COVID vaccination card, you might not need it, but every country is different.
