Inspiration!

If it’s one thing writers need a lot of, it’s space and time to think.

Your ability to find the time and space you need will depend very much of your circumstances. Finding that time might be as simple as taking the dog for a walk, or as complex as carving out extra hours in the day whether that be an early rise or late bedtime.

I once heard a story of a writer who wrote during lulls in patient visits. Another who took a day a week to focus solely on her writing. Still another sets a daily word count and maintains it during the time it takes to create a draft.

Writers need both time to daydream and time to write. Finding a balance of both can be hard. Sometimes it’s about prioritising your writing over everything else. Sometimes it’s about taking a break to recharge.

I spent the first four months of this year finishing a draft of my novel ‘The Lace Sisters’ (more on that in upcoming blogs). I used the deadline of a writing competition to help me edit it and now I’m waiting for the results (fingers crossed!).

Now it’s an awkward in-between phase while I work out what to write next. This is where the idea for this blog came – how to find inspiration before, during, and after, the intense writing needed to create a piece of work.

For me, I’m taking a trip soon and I’m so looking forward to (hopefully) finding inspiration in new experiences. Most of all, I’m keen take all the time I need to daydream and to write.

How do you find your inspiration? And how do you find the time and space you need to create your work?

Until next time,

Jacqui.
