The Cloud Captains

Once upon a time when I first dreamt of being an author, I wrote stories for children, mostly middlegrade fiction.

Many of them were terrible, as most early writing is, but I loved to make stories just because I could.

I wrote about soulful children who had tragic lives, about sailing and deserts and faraway places. My inspiration in those days were Le Guin, Lewis and Tolkien and I’m sure many of my stories tried to emulate theirs.

Although, today, I’ve found a love for historical and contemporary fiction, I still enjoy writing the occasional story for younger audiences.

That’s why I’m sharing the news that I’ve finally finished my longstanding work, The Cloud Captains.

The inspiration for the book came when I was taking a flight between Melbourne and Adelaide. It was at the end of what was called the ‘Millenium Drought’. For years Victoria had suffered dry winter upon dry winter and the ground was parched and arid. As I flew above the clouds that day I wondered what might happen if there was a way to learn how to capture and fly clouds and to harness the precious water they carried.

That led me to the story that became ‘The Cloud Captains’.

I haven’t released the book yet. Launch date is early September (fingers crossed!) but, as an experiment, I’m releasing chapters early on YouTube Kids.
